I was reading the Daily Mail mail last Friday and found out some great news about "super-food" blueberries... we're going to pop this info on our bartlett mitchell DARE (Delicious and Responsible Eating) cards which we circulate at each site as part of our Healthy Eating campaign.
Eating blueberries can improve your memory and reverse the forgetfulness of old age, research revealed last week.
The discovery has implications for future treatment and prevention of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.
Scientists found that compounds called flavonoids in blueberries and other fresh fruit interact with nerve cells, increasing communication between them and stimulating the regeneration of brain cells.
This can improve both short and long-term memory, the study in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine suggests.
The team behind the University of Reading research will now look at how flavonoid-rich diets affect those who have impaired cognitive function - the process of thinking, learning, and judging - including possibly Alzheimer's patients. Dementia - the decline of cognitive function - affects 700,000 in Britain and is expected to rise to one million in 20 years.
