It’s the start of Fair-trade fortnight and I know its something that many of you who check out my blog feel passionately about. We try and promote a lot in our restaurants, but what’s it all about?
Fair-trade is a system of trade based on direct relationships and makes sure that farmers and artisans:
-
Receive a fair price for their products
-
Have direct involvement in the marketplace,
-
Uphold environmental and labour rights.
Two of my favourite products we offer our customers under the banner of ‘Fair-trade’ are Divine Chocolate and Ben and Jerry’s Icecream
Divine Chocolate, the only Fair-trade chocolate company co-owned by cocoa farmers, announced that, for the first time chocolate lovers can taste Fair-trade cocoa from Sierra Leone in all its products. Sierra Leone was ravaged by a brutal and disruptive civil war for over ten years, which ended eight years ago. Rebuilding lives has been hard, and this first Fair-trade shipment of cocoa out of the country is a sign of hope that the fortunes and prospects of the country’s farmers can be turned around.
Even though its threatening to snow today I still enjoy a Ben & Jerry’s Icecream (with a special slovenly love for Phish Food!). Ben & Jerry's was the 1st ice cream company in the World to use Fair-trade certified ingredients starting in 2005. Today, it is the 1st ice cream company to make such a significant committment to Fair-trade across its' global portfolio.Ben & Jerry’s has announced its commitment to go fully Fair-trade across its entire business by the end of 2013. For this reason, we suggest it as one of our favourite ice cream suppliers in our restaurants, delis and cafes!
