I’m sure most of you know, but I just want to make sure you do! BBC Radio 4’s The Food Programme has a vast range of ‘listen again’ programmes available on offer on its website. I’ve listened to this program for years and for me it’s one of the foodie world’s best kept secrets. There is nothing faddy or gimmicky about it, it’s just good honest journalism, and the BBC at its best.
The online archive of The Food Programme offers informative insights into the food and drink industry as well as entertaining stories and debates. The range of topics covered is in-depth and vast, with themes like coffee, sustainable fish, soft drinks, and food photography to name a few. The 22nd April programme is about beetroot juice: many of our London restaurants are serving beetroot juice as a seasonal special as a result, ‘cos it’s fun, different and healthy. Coupled with a twist of lime juice it’s surprisingly scrummy!!
One of my food heroes, Shelia Dillon, features heavily. Last year she won the Glenfiddich Award for Best Broadcast for her programme on food and poverty. She also created Veg Talk, Radio 4’s interactive grocery show.
As well as the “listen again” facility, the BBC website offers visitors links to online articles on the topics covered in their featured shows, as well as information on up-coming shows. It’s broadcast on Sunday at 12.32, Monday at 16.00, and then available as a podcast here.
